What Happens in a Poker Hand?

During a poker game, the aim is to create the best possible poker hand. A poker hand is made up of five cards. The highest ranked hand wins the pot. The pot is a collection of bets made by all players in one deal. If a hand is tied, the tie is broken by the highest unmatched card. If two identical hands tie, each hand shares the pot equally. If three of a kind is tied, the tie is broken by the three highest unmatched cards.

After the shuffle, the dealer deals the first three cards of the community deck face up. The first card is called the flop. The second card is called the turn. This is the first set of three cards dealt after the first round of betting. The last card is called the river.

The player on the left of the dealer begins the game by betting the second blind, which is usually equal to the first blind. This is a small amount of money that is normally required by a player to make the first bet. The player to the dealer’s left may check or raise the bet.
